Weirdest Food I Ever Ate

I love to try new food. To me, it’s one of the aboslute joys of traveling to new places. It’s like taking in the culture with a sense only used sparesly.

When traveling to the Philippines last spring, I was offered to try a local delicacy called Balut. It was explained to me that this was a very special dish, and that not many foreigners dared to try it. At this point I was getting a little relucatant, but still accepted the offer, and was served an egg. What was special with the egg was that it contained a fertilized duck embryo that was somewhere are around 16 days old!

After cracking the shell and drinking the broth, I peeled the egg, and discovered the partially developed duckling. It was gruesome to look at, but I was not going to back down now. I added some salt, some vinegar and proceeded to put the whole thing in my mouth. I was surprised that the taste was actually quite good. A bit meatier than egg, but it did have a really weird texture.

All in all, that is probably the most odd thing I have ever eaten.

Now that I’m officially centralized here in the Philippines, teaching English and living out my dreams, I think that it’s time to start thinking about more education.
